Social Breakdown

Don't have much time, but I did want to comment on what experts say is a social breakdown into predatory violence in New Orleans. According to a source quoted by Drudge, experts are noting signs of complete social breakdown in the city due to the living conditions and general environment of New Orleans. There are also reports of people being beaten and raped inside the Superdome. It is absolutely heart breaking to read the stories coming out of New Orleans. It is great to see the generosity of Texans and the city of Houston for welcoming New Orleansrefugees into the Astrodome. It's time for some serious, heavy-handed government action to get this situation under control.

they've sent 25,000 National Guard down today. So, that should at least help. Isn't it a travesty that people have just lost their minds and their morals down there? Forgetting for a moment the looters, there was apparently a sniper who 'set up shop' on a caravan attempting to remove patients from a flooded hospital. Crazy!

I heard one report today ask the question, which, for some reason I've been asking myself...should New Orleans be rebuilt? It would be the first death of a major American City, but I think that it may be beyond saving...(New New Orleans...?)

the news this morning was nothing but depressing, shocking and really sad. they said unfortunately the majority of those left in NO were those under the poverity line and the elderly.

Holly,
The fact that the poor and elderly were not able to escape is really tought to come to terms with. Makes one longer for Home so much more.
Chad,
I have heard people comment about rebuilding New Orleans as well. Speaker Dennis Hastert wondered allowed why we keep rebuilding cities in known disaster areas (San Fran and LA on fault lines, New Orleans in a deadly flood plain). Is it really the best situation to rebuild NO? I don't know...it may not be.

Brian,
You are right, the feds must do more. I do have to hand it to the state and local governments...with their limited resources they have done a mammoth job. Certainly there were errors, but from what I can tell at this time, it was the federal government that really dropped the ball. With each hour, the situation keeps getting worse. As for preventing hurricanes...don't you know Brian, we just need to sign the Kyoto Protocol ;) lol.

If you believe the Federal Government dropped the ball...read my blog, it was most definately the local government. The mayor of New Orleans did not allow people to be evacuated on school busses, because he wanted to wait for more comfortable "greyhound" busses. Way to go local government!
