Darfur

Al Mohler has a great commentary on the genocide in Darfur. Worth a read.
Also, New York Times journalist Nicholas Kristof--who's a very good international journalist--has written extensively on the subject. Here's one example: Genocide in Slow Motion.

They're externalities. Just like anything else that we are not required to think about. "Out of sight, out of mind" is a much truer statement than many people realize. We're not forced to count them into our foreign policy or into our individual lives, so we don't. But, the next question becomes: now that we (as a nation) and I (as an individual) know about this, and am thinking about it, what's the next step? What do we do with the information? And, how do we (the US) internalize the world's suffering without becoming the world's police, a policy that seems to help us not at all? I suppose a first start is to thank God for people like Kristof (a wonderful example of how God can use even those who do attack His people - see Saul/Paul for further details) for bringing this to the attention of the world.

Your exactly right. We so often and so easily put these things out of our minds. Too some extent that's good, otherwise we'd just be depressed all the time. I've got to do this with my job...when I leave the office the people without money, those that can't work, and those that are upset with me, must stay at the office. I can't bring that baggage home.

However, there are things that we can do concerning Darfur. First, and most importantly we need to be praying for peace in the region and praying that Christ will be made known there. Secondly we can write our Congressman and our Senators letting them know how we feel about this situation. I know you have first-hand knowledge of how this correspondence is handled by our elected officials. When enough people raise a fuss, people listen. I believe those are two very important ways we can do something about this situation. Plus there are numerous organizations on the frontlines delivering food and other aid to the oppressed. Finally I think we can play a part by tellling others about this situation...like Kristof (though not as eloquently or as informed as he).
